I was there too & it was much more a save than a miss. Hurstie used to smash his penalties & missed very few. Stoke were destined to win that SF tie when we ended up with Bobby Moore in goal for the replay when Bobby Fergusson got concussed. Big Clive was the designated back up keeper (no subs then) but couldn't face doing it. BM faced a penalty & saved the initial shot. Stoke went on the win the final, the first time they had ever won anything I think?

Really weird as I even remember the way we went home that night walked down to the Mile End road and caught a 25 bus !!

And to think, he should have been down the other end in our goal!

Hurst always blasted his penalties into the top left corner. Banks knew this from playing together for England. Mind you, any goalie worth his salt would have known this too.
My Dad promised to wake me up to watch the highlights, which were on about 10ish that night. The bugger didn't, though.

On the strength of this, I had another look at Banks save from Pele and amongst the comments was this gem:
"HE'S ALREADY THERE! There's a longer angle that proves it trust me. He's already made his way over well before Pele even heads it. It's the most overated save ever in the history of football! It's shit, England are shit and Banks is a one-eyed Stoke Cunt"

Like several others have mentioned, I too was on the North Bank right behind the goal. I really thought I was going to Wembley to see West Ham (I had enough match programme tokens to guarantee a final ticket). It was either a great save or Banks raised his had in petrified self defence and the ball hit it - I never could make up my mind

The world cup save in 1970 from Pele
love it how our Bobby slaps him on the arse afterwards.

If my memory serves we played them a week or two later and he saved another hurst pen but this was a much better save.

I was behind the goal in the North Bank, about 10 rows back, exactly behind the shot. I remember Banks's hand coming from nowhere to deflect the ball into the stand somewhere to my right. When I watch the TV footage I know exactly where to look but can't identify myself. I went to the final reply at Old Trafford, another famous game.

I was there with the old man, me uncle Ron and their mate TEL, in our usual spot, against the fence that seperated the north bank and west side.
As i said on a thread last week that penalty save caused my heart to be broken for the first time in my life. I was 11.

I was there right behind the goal in the North Bank
Out of all the penalties that Hurst scored I had an odd feeling he was going to miss that one
Hell of a save from Banks, though he moved before the ball was kicked & seemed to telegraph where the ball was heading
It was that sort of a night & yet another time we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory
I can clearly remember Tommy Taylor showboating & ridiculously losing posession
We had it sewn up & blew it!

I was there.
But I didn't see the penalty live - there were too many people jumping up expecting to see it hit the back of the net, and my view the box was zero when GH hit the ball

My first time at UP. North Bank, the end the penalty was taken. Given the time of year I was probably in something more substantial than MY green Harrington. Did we all have them in '71?

Me too but stood in the South Bank and just like Dagenhammer me and many around me feared the worst when Hurst went to take it. Gutted.
I also remember getting a clip round the ear when I got home for getting non-drying silver paint all over my green Harrington jacket that evening.

Was there too. In the North Bank, one of, if not my worst moment at Upton Park.
Throughout most of the match Geoff Hurst was holding his back, if I remember right he suffered a bit with his back towards the end of his career.
So when we got the penalty and he was up against Banks, you just knew it would end in tears, a bit like the Gerrard moment in the cup final.
